Reunion 2007 Log:

The first reunion update... Friday evening, June 1, 8:49pm

I think the class of 1992 definitely has some friends in high places, since we have scored South Rocky as our reunion HQ. Many of us remember this place fondly (although sometimes hazily,) and not much has changed, aside from the constant presence of an open bar and donuts in the living room.

The couches have gotten some good use as the early arrivals catch up before heading out to "Pizza, Beer and Networking" over at Prospect. They have signs on the table with different fields, from finance to the arts to law to self-employed and a bunch more, and you can plop down wherever you find a vocational home or just think the people look as if they are having a good time. Lots of women from '77, '72 and '97 on hand to talk about the cool things they do; my table has a real estate investor (who has advanced degrees in Marine Biology and Biochem), a children's book author (who composes hymns for fun,) and our own Julia Parker Cronin, farmer and researcher who is offering what has to be the most original internship opportunity ever: a chance to 'evicerate hogs' on her cool, sustainable farm and even get paid $9 an hour for it.

Just saw Erin Ennis, Alicechandra Fritz and Laura Althoff all dressed up and heading to the President's for the Cornerstone reception. They promise to return to the living room soon.

For those of you who feel like a little weather report really sets the scene, it is hot, humid, and very much like my home of Atlanta, except the welcome absence of turbo-charged air conditioning in every indoor space. What did we do in May in these dorms again? Oh, right, these things called fans.

Update Two. Saturday morning. June 2. 7:10am

If you're reading this, we do miss you. We were asking about you. And we almost drunk-dialed you last night. What went wrong? What did we do back then that's kept you away? It was just a prank, we were just kids...

Had you been here hanging last night, here are a few of the conversations you could have enjoyed:

  • What it's like to work for USAID in Africa...and then come home and become the parent of an 11 year old
  • There is a way to get out of a car without showing the world that you've skipped underwear, and Britney's Mama should have shared this with her
  • You don't have to name your baby before you bring it home from the hospital (Urban legend!)
  • Liz Kennan's joie de vivre, fondly remembered
  • They never did have auditions for "Dirty Dancing Two" at ...

Update Three. Saturday evening. June 2. 10:12pm

For Bronnie, the Laurel Parade began with waking up in her room, drenched in sweat, to the sound of bagpipes. She thought about running to join the parade but then remembered that she did not have light-colored undergarments.

The rest of us, who did have the proper foundation garments, assembled in front of Blanchard in the steamy heat. Everyone gave their pashmina a personal twist. Some at the neck, some on the waist, over the shoulder, as a sash, or just draped over a sticky arm. We marched to cheers (and piping) around the green, admiring the turnout and the 'flair' other classes were wearing, from glasses to visors to insulated water cooler bags. Standing in rows in front of Chapin, we welcomed the legacy classes (in golf carts, not vintage cars.)

Update Three and a half. Saturday evening. June 2. 10:16pm

This morning, at our class meeting, talk turned to money and the fact that we were $2000 short of what the class of '91 raised at their 15th reunion. Well, in 35 post-breakfast minutes, we raised $4300, led by our new class President Melanie Carino, who immediately offered $1500 and invited everyone else to jump in and make the rest of the goal.

On another monetary note, it turns out that only about 10 of us paid our $5 class dues, and it seemed approximately 60% present had no idea that there were dues. Please make a note of it and know that it was decided not to raise the price, but to raise awareness...

Update four. Saturday evening. June 2. 10:02pm

The highlight of the alumnae meeting was the class history read by the class of '42. It started with a description of life with stockings worn to dinner and maids to clean the room before the reality and consequences of WWII changed everything.

It turns out we have a special connection to '42, as the class decided to give us a gift of $1992 at their 50th, our graduation year, to put into a fund that would mature and be there to fund our own 50th reunion. They contacted us to find out if we could meet up with them, which we did at Willits. It was inspiring to hear what they had to say about their time at MHC and the lessons they'd learned since. One had a mother in the class of 1892, who followed in the path of her mother who was here in the 1850s! They'd met Eleanor Roosevelt, started careers in fields from fashion to science, and one flew here in her own plane (at age 88.) Punch and cookies were served, lots of smiles, and quite a few misty eyes resulted.

Update five. Saturday evening. June 2. 10:20pm

The general review of the reunion so far is that even if your regular crew of college pals is underrepresented, you have a blast meeting people you never knew or getting reaquainted with others who you just nodded to in the halls...and sometimes finding out that they live just two miles away!

Because the size of the group isn't giant, it's easy to chat with lots of the 92ers on campus. Should you need help remembering, all our yearbook photos are posted in enlarged form by the bell desk. Hairstyles are a big source of commentary (let the record show that my hair is NOT just the same, despite several opinions to the contrary.)

Update Six. Saturday evening. June 2. 10:25pm

Here's one reason why our class is the coolest. On the program, all the other classes have their class dinners listed in one dining hall or another, very expected and sedate. Our listing? "The HuKeLau, Chicopee."

Oh yeah. The bus picked us up at 5:30, bound for the Polynesian tribute show and the Pu-Pu platters, which were termed 'pupulicious.' The highlight of the show was when a herd of 92ers and their kids took the stage with the "Samoans" for a thumping rendition of "shake your groove thing." Photographic evidence to follow...

Update Seven. Saturday evening. June 2. 10:34pm

Does the way you thought your life would turn out on graduation day in '92 in any way resemble the way it looks now? General consensus: "Hell no!" , "I though I'd have it all figured out at 30.", "I never thought I'd be in America/be a lawyer/have three kids", and "I thought I might die young and tragic, and now I might just die tragic and old." Direct quotes, dear readers.

Update Eight. Sunday Morning. June 3. 7:46am

The difference between the 10th and the 15th, according to Maria and Hillary, chairs of that reunion, is that this one is more relaxed, because, as individuals, members of our class are lot more laid back. And, several said they left their kids and husbands at home this time. Speaking of kids, watch your class updates for new arrivals, since at least five of us here for the 15th have a baby on board.

Update Nine. Sunday Morning. June 3. 7:56am

There were some strange happenings late last night...

Right at the stroke of midnight, a chorus of full-voiced LUNAR HOWLS could be heard on every dorm on the Green. Maybe former Bellatrix alums had a special session of the Lunar Howling Society? Were the Howlers actually members of our class even though they were calling out "class of '72 rocks!"

Also, in the living room, there was a night owl brainstorming session for possible signs we could carry at the 20th. Suggestions included:

  • I'm still wearing the same white dress I wore to my first Laurel Parade
  • Erin made me do it
  • X% of us have tattoos somewhere
  • x% of us had sex in our MHC dorm rooms
  • Born in the 70's, we're the first class who came after '69
  • Liz Kennan was our hero
